Travel plans don’t always come with six months’ notice, especially when it comes to business demands or family emergencies. If you’ve been deemed inadmissible to Canada but need to enter urgently, there is a path forward: the expedited processing of a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP).

KLM Immigration regularly assists clients with last-minute TRP filings. We help individuals understand the eligibility criteria, gather all necessary documentation, and ensure they’re following strict government timelines. If you’re in a situation where time is tight, here is everything you need to know about filing a TRP at the last minute.

What Is an Expedited TRP?

A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) allows someone who is otherwise inadmissible to Canada to enter for a specific reason and a limited time. Expedited TRP processing is available for applicants whose travel to Canada is urgent and meets certain government-defined criteria.

As of October 2024, you must submit urgent TRP applications at least five (5) business days before the intended date of travel. Submissions made less than five days before travel will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. However, be aware that they carry a high risk of being returned without processing due to operational limitations.

Acceptable Reasons for Last-Minute TRP Requests

There are two main categories where a last-minute TRP application may qualify for expedited processing:

1. Commercial activity (including the entertainment industry) with a significant economic impact and pre-arranged dates.

You may be eligible if your presence in Canada is important for business or industry-related reasons. This includes professional musicians or performers, film and television professionals, professional athletes or coaches, or key participants in critical business functions.

This often includes high-profile events, filming schedules, sporting competitions, or executive-level business meetings that have a significant commercial impact on the Canadian economy.

2. Urgent family matters, normally with humanitarian and compassionate circumstances.

Family-related emergencies that may qualify for expedited TRP consideration include ailing or terminally ill family members, urgent caregiving responsibilities, and funeral or end-of-life visits. In these cases, time sensitivity and supporting documentation, such as medical letters or proof of relationship, are critical.

Which Criteria Matter Most?

When evaluating whether to expedite a TRP application, immigration officers look at several different factors:

  • The urgency of the travel and whether the event is time-sensitive
  • The importance of the applicant’s presence in Canada
  • Whether the applicant poses a low risk to Canadian public safety
  • The completeness and clarity of the application, including supporting documents

There is no guarantee with expedited processing, but a well-prepared application significantly improves your chances.

How Quickly Does Approval Take?

If your application qualifies and receives acceptance for urgent processing, approval can sometimes happen in a matter of a few business days. However, results vary depending on the volume of applications, staffing, and other operational factors at the visa office handling your case.

Applications that do not meet the urgent processing criteria will either be returned or unprocessed or revert to standard processing times, which can take up to six months or more.

Keep in mind that under the IRCC Los Angeles, you must submit urgent TRP applications no later than 5 business days before travel. Otherwise, a late application may receive refusal. You must also provide clear evidence of urgency, relevance, and admissibility support. Legal assistance through a firm like KLM Immigration is the best approach to avoid delays or rejections.

Don’t Take Chances with Last-Minute Travel

If you find yourself needing to enter Canada on short notice but have past inadmissibility issues, a last-minute TRP may still be possible, but timing, documentation, and professional support are everything.

At KLM Immigration, we help clients prepare urgent TRP applications quickly, accurately, and in line with current Canadian immigration guidelines.
